Defend the District

The Redwoods District is a valuable and vital community resource and it should be maintained and protected

The Issue: College of the Redwoods is facing significant financial challenges that threaten the quality of education and support services provided to students. These challenges include increasing pension liabilities, deferred maintenance costs, and rising inflation. Without adequate funding and support, the college may struggle to attract and retain talented faculty and staff, and may be forced to cut back on critical services and programs.

The Solution: We need to defend the district by supporting the President/Superintendent and advocating for increased funding and resources for College of the Redwoods. This includes:

Securing Campus Safety: We need to ensure that the campus is safe and secure for all students, faculty, and staff. This includes investing in campus security measures, improving emergency response protocols, and increasing resources for mental health and wellness services.

Funding Pensions: We need to ensure that our employees have wages that keep pace with rising inflation, and that we can fund our pension obligations. This includes advocating for increased funding from state and local sources, exploring alternative revenue streams, and developing innovative strategies for managing pension liabilities.

Fixing Infrastructure: We need to address the deferred maintenance needs of the college, including repairing and upgrading facilities, equipment, and technology. This includes prioritizing infrastructure investments in the college’s strategic planning process, advocating for increased capital funding from state and local sources, and exploring public-private partnerships to leverage additional resources.

By defending the district and supporting College of the Redwoods, we can ensure that our students receive the high-quality education and support services they deserve, and that our employees are able to thrive in their careers. With a focus on securing the campus, funding pensions, and fixing infrastructure, we can build a stronger, more resilient College of the Redwoods for generations to come.
